it's timeless and it pissed Pitchfork off, which is good. Good fucking god, monotheists should enjoy this one too. FJM is no atheist, he seems to enjoy poking at "both sides" for shits and giggles.

Father John Misty could be described as the Leonard Cohen of millennials, with his existentialist lyrics and images. He is a blessing to the current indie world, exploring the problems of conformity/ herd mentality and the individual’s search for intimacy and meaning while crooning in his soothing voice. “Total Entertainment Forever” is a haunting meditation on humanity’s relationship with technology and the end of this era, with a sweet tune and soaring piano lines and rousing saxophone licks.
Favorite track: Total Entertainment Forever.

This one is really grew on me. There's a subtly to it that is unlike any pop music today. It's jarring at times and sometimes I think people need that. That said, he seems like the male counterpoint to Lana Del Ray in a lot of ways but he manages a wider span of tone, thank mother nature.

'Pure Comedy', Father John Misty’s third album, is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released two widely acclaimed albums – 'Fear Fun' (2012) and 'I Love You, Honeybear' (2015) – and the recent “Real Love Baby” single as Father John Misty, and recently contributed to songs by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Kid Cudi.
While we could say a lot about 'Pure Comedy' – including that it is a bold, important album in the tradition of American songwriting greats like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and Leonard Cohen – we think it’s best to let its creator describe it himself. Take it away, Mr. Tillman:
'Pure Comedy' is the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species’ only hope for survival, finding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like “love,” “culture,” “family,” etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species’ loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence.
Something like that.
'Pure Comedy' was recorded in 2016 at the legendary United Studios (Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Beck) in Hollywood, CA. It was produced by Father John Misty and Jonathan Wilson, with engineering by Misty’s longtime sound-person Trevor Spencer and orchestral arrangements by renowned composer/double-bassist Gavin Bryars (known for extensive solo work, and work with Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Derek Bailey).
i spent ages only liking motion sickness and kyoto then i listened to this album on LOUD and was like oooo its so cool actually exciting so now i want B.B. Bridgers to make a full rock album please like channel heatmiser please the world needs it ok i feeeel something.... Ben Collins
My favorite album all of time (This or Twin Fantasy, it changes depending on the day). Each track, vocal delivery, lyric, and instrument seems so well thought out. It introduces so much interesting ideas but never dwells on them long enough that they get stale. The variety of topics it covers is impeccably detailed, making it clear the band put so much effort into capturing the emotion for each and every one of them. Absolute real art.

I listened to this during a hard break up and while it's not fair to compare a break up to the finality of death, this album was able to express my feelings towards the pit it left. I don’t think I've consumed any media more powerful than this one. I really appreciate this album for what it took and what it gave. bike_abuser
